Timeframe and Commitment

1 May – 16 June 2021

The Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) has published a Call for Evidence seeking views on pension trustees’ approaches to social factors and resulting risks and opportunities for their schemes.

Pension trustees are the target audience for the Call for Evidence; seven of the eight questions are specifically addressed at trustees and CFA UK does not propose to respond to these.  However, the final question (Q8), relating directly or indirectly to investment in Emerging Markets, is open:

What opportunities are there for trustees to invest, directly or indirectly in companies solving social issues in developing or emerging markets?  How attractive are these investments?”

CFA UK invites applications for up to 6 volunteers to join 4 members of CFA UK’s Pension Expert Panel and write a response to the DWP addressing the above question.  Applications should provide some initial views on how the applicant would answer the question.

The purpose and activity of this working group is to:

  • Author a response letter to the DWP specifically addressing the above question
  • Reflect the views of CFA UK’s members and the investment profession in that response

Who are CFA UK looking for?

  • Members with day-to-day experience of investing in Emerging Markets
  • A diverse Working Group across different industry sectors, asset classes and geographies
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Availability for 10-12 hrs in total during Q2 2021 (split approximately 40% in virtual meetings and 60% in preparation)

What will you get out of it?

  • Purposeful participation in a group looking to provide insight to the DWP about investment opportunities in Emerging Markets
  • Networking with and benefiting from the professional experience of four senior members of CFA UK’s PEP and other CFA UK members
  • Opportunity to present your opinions to CFA UK’s Professionalism Steering Committee
