The goal of this working group is to explore in depth the subject of data science as a whole with particular emphasis on machine learning and AI. It should include current and potential applications, trends in the field, comparison of different methods, how to conceptualise and frame an issue to be solved and how that may affect the outcome. You will be creating an engaging Data Science storyline for our membership to learn from and enjoy. The group should aim to deliver a programme across the 2023-2024 membership year and beyond that engages with as much of CFA UK’s membership as possible.

The group is tasked with:

  • Identifying where CFA UK has gaps in content around the area of Data Science
  • Curating content for Discover that lines up with the competency framework with a focus on filling identified gaps
  • Creating or commissioning original content for Discover:
    • Ensuring content is in line with CFA UK’s quality standards
    • Contacting subject matter experts requesting original submissions
    • Identifying potential podcast guests
  • Proposing webinar topics and speakers around the area of Data Science in line with event delivery schedule
  • Regular liaison with the Head of Professional Learning and Events Team to ensure the best content delivery.


Who are we looking for?

  • Volunteers who are highly motivated quantitative data scientists, data engineers or innovation specialists ideally with comprehensive mathematical modelling and implementation skills, and in depth knowledge of quantitative finance e.g Term Structure Models, Financial Risk Management, Structured and Unstructured Data Visualisation
  • Or a volunteer who may be holding position in quantitative asset management/ hedge fund space ideally focusing on developing financial models tools/ algorithms, using various programming languages, to improve data collection methods and to produce solutions to problems
  • Volunteers with strong connections to the fintech industry
  • Availability for around six meetings throughout the membership year plus conference calls and work to move ideas forward between meetings
  • Ability to work with a group to shape ideas.
  • Understanding of what would interest the membership around this topic area.
