Integrity is the bedrock of nature markets. It means that credits or units (referred to as units hereafter) awarded and sold for benefits, such as biodiversity, carbon capture or water quality, must reflect genuine, lasting and additional environmental improvements, which are robustly verified and transparently documented, with no double counting, misleading claims or negative unintended consequences, for example for non-target ecosystem services or local communities. Purchasing units that do not represent real environmental outcomes is a key risk for buyers and investors in nature markets right now. For private finance to continue to scale in these markets, this risk must be addressed. BSI, in partnership with Defra, the Devolved Administrations and the market, is evaluating how standards can address these challenges, support the growth of nature markets, and help to unlock environmental benefits.
Question to community: How much exposure do your portfolios have to nature investments or nature related risks? What kind of metrics are you using?
