LSE Hosted a presentation and panel discssion around analysis done at the TPI Global Climate Transition Centre which is located with the LSE.

Worth a watch to see the state of play and the current assessment of the state of progress from a panel of finance sector stakeholders.

What is the state of climate solution investment?
LSE Hosted a presentation and discussion around the Investibility of various sectors supported by the work the TPI have done on leading corporates and how they are disclosing on climate solutions. Both corporate and Banking disclosure and level of support for climate solutions was covered.

    Issues covered were:
    βœ… Level of disclosure
βœ… Detail around disclosure and evidence of a plan into future years
πŸ’° Level of Capex and Financial commitment
πŸ’‘ TRL assesment of climate solutions (Investment ready)

Discussion post the presentation covered how investors and sustainability advocating and monitoring organisations are viewing the opportunity and degree to which invest-ability has moved beyond wind and solar.

    Takeaways
βœ… Disclosure is being driven by taxonomies and regulation making disclosure mandatory. However the admin load is significant and for most companies focus on what matters in their case is likely to be more informative and more useful for companies and investors in assessing transition pathways to net zero.
βœ… Depth of disclosure and quantification of capex  (Corporates) and in particular finance (Banks) is poor to woeful.
πŸ’‘ There is a clear tipping point for a climate solution when it is commercially competitive. This triggers scale up and uptake and mainstreaming of the solution.
🧠 Experimentation and innovation prototyping investments are going on in most sectors but only Wind and Solar have really broken out. EV and batteries are also gaining traction but while electricity is not fully decarbonised it isn't a "real solution" yet.
πŸ™„ They looked at readiness and the breadth of corporates investing in solutions.
πŸš€ Governments can anticipate scale up and commercial adoption by regulatory and or fiscal policy but are slow to do so.
πŸ’‘ It is obvious that aside from renewable energy transition pathways while starting to develop road maps are at very early stages and there is a lot to be done and a more forceful and urgent mindset is needed.

πŸ€” For the most part corporates are doing R&D levels of investment in climate solutions before committing significant capex. The lack of visible positive returns from R&D means finance/Banking is focused on wind and solar and beyond that basically just advocating for solution development by clients up until commercial traction can be demonstrated.
