Permira's majority stake in CDP has triggered some predicatable questions:
- Is #privateequity turning a public good into a profit engine?
- Does this dilute CDP's mission?
- Is this really a vote of confidence for #ESG or just opportunitistic behaviour?
It feels that its more about the commercialistaion of decision-grade #sustainabilitydata
CDP is being split: A Foundation to preserve its mission. A commercial entity to scale the data and analytics.
Sustainabilty data is no longer being collected for just reporting, it is being used to answer core financial questions:
- How exposed is your portfolio to physical climate risk?
- What happens to valuations under water stress or carbon pricing?
- Where are supply chain vulnerabilities hiding?
Are we moving from fragemented compliance-led disclosure to structured, AI-ready datasets embedded in financial decision-making?
Is private capital doubling down on sustainability as an investable data layer, not a passing theme?
Good question to talk about during our CFA UK Sustainability Community Summit in October. I am working on agenda now with community champions, but if you have any recommendations or ideas, share them with me and I hope to see you there!

P.S. And another question:
who will own all the data companies have submitted to a non-profit entity (and were charged for this) on behalf of investors over the years?
