Hello Community!
I am delighted to be back from my 2 weeks holiday in the lovely Spain! We were happy to be back in the chilled UK. Hope everyone had nice breaks and are feeling re-charged!
At CFA UK and in this community we do talk about what skills are needed for us to be ready for the future. Well, we can all agree that AI is included in that future / present, so I thought I'd share this article from Forbes on how AI is pushing the world toward's energy crisis.
While many organisations are now aiming to have AI protocols and practices and are training their employees on AIs, have we thought about it from the sustainability point of view? Can we actually afford AI (both from cost and carbon footrprint angles)?
AI Uses a Lot of Energy
AI, especially with things like deep learning and big models (think ChatGPT or image generators), needs a ton of computing power. Training these models takes huge datasets and lots of time, using super energy-demanding GPUs and TPUs. Just one training session for a top-tier model can use as much energy as five cars over their entire lifespans! And since these models need to be developed, deployed, and constantly retrained, the energy use adds up fast.
AI's Carbon Footprint Problem
While AI is pushing tech forward in amazing ways, the downside is that it's creating a pretty hefty carbon footprint. The balance between innovation and sustainability is becoming more challenging, and it's not clear if we're ready to handle this trade-off.
