    OFFICIAL USE

    Hi everyone,

I am Martin Pospisil, I work as Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). We are a multilateral developmental investment bank and we use investment as a tool to build market economies in about 40 markets of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Since 1991 we have invested over €180 billion in more than 6,800 projects across three continents. We are a climate finance leader and actively support Ukraine and other countries affected by the war there.

My job is to assess impact of EBRD projects (ex-ante, ex-post) and report on results. I lead the work on EBRD Country Results Snapshots and the Bank's alignment with the Operating Principles for Impact Management.

Hope to connect to people with similar interests.

    Kind regards

    Martin

    Hi Martin,

    It's good to meet you.

thank you for sharing your and EBRD's information. I had a look at the country snapshots that you shared, however there isn't overlap between the cities that C40 and the EBRD support.

One of the EBRD's esteemed colleagues - Josue Tanaka - is sharing insights with C40 to build out the climate finance aspects. You may know Josue, hence I'm mentioning him as it's often a small world.

I trust there will be areas to speak about as EBRD is a stalwart in the climate finance arena.

    Best Regards,

    Anita

I am a bottom-up fundamental investor, and companies corporate governance and social responsibilities policies have always been a critical focus when researching and investing in a firm.

    Hi CFA UK Community,

I am Sabrine Aouida, Chief Impact Officer of WeeFin, a french green fintech founded in 2018. WeeFin aims to raise standards of sustainable finance and making it the norm by helping professional investors (AM, AO, Wealth Manager, Asset Servicer...) to create more ambitious ESG strategies and by fighting against greenwashing. In that order, WeeFin developed a platform 100% dedicated to ESG that allows investors to centralize, manage their ESG processes and easily collaborate around them: connect and aggregate all sustainability data, create more ambitious ESG strategies and produce ESG reportings.

As the Chief Impact Officer at Weefin, my role is to ensure that our mission-driven approach aligns with the tools we offer our clients. This involves establishing and overseeing impact KPIs to assess the correlation between platform usage and the generated impact. My position enables me to act as a catalyst for change, guiding clients towards more ambitious sustainable strategies and higher industry standards. I also play a crucial role in representing and elevating Weefin's voice in the industry, thanks to our significant position in the market. We actively contribute to discussions and advancements in sustainability, using our influence to drive change and foster dialogue on sustainable development within the sector.

In 2024, our project at Weefin is to open offices in London and assist UK investors in developing more ambitious ESG strategies. We plan to participate in and host events, as well as engage directly with investors. We are available and look forward to having further conversations.

    Best regards

Congratulations! Great to see growth and expansion of WeeFin to London.

Do you also provide legal advice to clients, or are you solely a data management platform?

How do you source ESG data? Do you expect clients to buy data from data vendors, or do you buy data yourself?

In terms of regulatory compliance, what regulations and jurisdictions you cover?

Would be nice to learn more about WeeFin.

    Hi Anastasia,

Thank you for the warm welcome. I mainly working with SFDR, therefore, so far my connection with CSRD primarily involves whether an entity needs to report or not, which has is own perks especially, when it comes to certain financial markets participants.  However, given the maturity of some CEE market players, the main issue seems to be how to report or what can be material from both the point of the financial and impact assessment. So far, the latter one seems to be handled mainly on "based on our understanding" approach.

    Regards

    Denisa

Thank you for sharing more details about your expertise.

I definitely support your observations about double materiality assessment. I would also add "based on our understanding, understanding of our peers and outcomes of discussions in external working groups". Hopefully, the approach will improve after the first CSRD reports are published next year.

Hi everyone! My name is Jack Chellman, and I run a UK charity called the Global Returns Project (GRP). We make it easy for individuals and corporates to donate to high-impact climate and nature charities, with a particular focus on partnering with investment managers and financial planners.

Advised by a team of leading environmental scientists, we select and assess a diverse portfolio of best-in-class climate and nature charities. Donations are made to GRP, which distributes 100% to the organisations a donor wants to support, without deductions. Donors then receive detailed six-monthly impact reports and access to our community and events.

My broader interest is in green philanthropy's role as a complement to sustainable finance. Less than 2% of global philanthropy goes to climate mitigation efforts. But the truth is that many of the most important solutions for our planet cannot deliver financial returns - projects like protecting rainforests, setting up marine protected areas, enforcing environmental law and more. Even the highest quality sustainable fund would struggle to support these initiatives, meaning green philanthropy has an important role to play alongside sustainable investing.

I'd be keen to get the community's thoughts on environmental philanthropy and its role in sustainable finance. For a quick overview of GRP's perspective, you might enjoy this 3-minute video we put together: https://youtu.be/n1brdBfXxDc?feature=shared

    Hi everyone,

I'm Som Toohey - from the UK but based in the Netherlands (and members of both CFA UK and NL). I pass by London/Manchester/Liverpool a few times a year to visit.

I work for an impact investor called IDH Investment Management currently managing one fund, the IDH Farmfit Fund, but with new mandates to be made public soon (all impact investing - emerging market agri or rural community focus). I'm a Senior Investment Manager, responsible for direct investments.

IDH Farmfit Fund: A EUR 100m blended finance vehicle active in private equity and private debt investments with the primary goal being to improve smallholder farmer lives across Africa, India, SE Asian and Latin America. Climate of course is playing an increasingly important role with seasonal patterns changing and affecting this vulnerable group of people immensely. The goal of the fund is to help smallholder farmer financing become an asset class over time. Hopefully we'll be fully invested by the end of next year. For more see: https://www.idhsustainabletrade.com/farmfit-fund/

Would be particularly keen to meet people active in emerging and frontier market impact investing as well as sustainability to share notes. Some things on my mind - de-risking farmer financing (loan product design, insurance), financing activities such as to promote intercropping/multi-crop farming, drip irrigation/precision agriculture, agroforestry in a sustainable way, regeneration of land (looking at that a bit in Brazil) and lots more.

Also as I grew up in Southport, very interested to see if anything is going on near there for general interest (Liverpool/Preston - and perhaps Manchester but less so as the train is so appalling from Southport it may as well be on a different continent).

    Kind regards,

    Som

Nice to meet you Denisa. The CEE region is interesting as there is a lot to do there but some long time traditional global impact investors like Oikocredit, who were more focussed on microfinance, pulled out a few years ago. I haven't personally had dealings with the up and coming fund managers of the region investing in more innovative business models and ventures but understand it's growing. Impact investing is a great space and for me is investing in businesses focussed on generating sustainable returns over the longer term (not necessarily year 5). As I deal with a lot of companies which transact with smallholder farmers across the world - businesses need to generate a fair return but also protect their clients if they are vulnerable (e.g. through transparency - which is why my firm has helped develop a client protection toolkit on this for the industry to use) - this can also increase client retention over time for the business which will pay off economically too.

    Hi All

I'm Roshan, a senior associate at Temporis Capital. Our firm is focussed across the renewable infrastructure space primarily in the UK and Ireland. My focus has been historically across wind, solar and fibre infrastructure and more recently into development stage energy storage.

I'm really keen to find out about networking opps and finding an industry mentor for guidance across my career

    thanks

    Hi Roshan,

    Welcome to the sustainability community.
By way of introduction, I’m working within sustainability on the granting side - namely applying for and implementing government funding. We focus on delivering technical assistance to cities in the Global South.

Previously, I was in corporate banking across Sub-Saharan Africa.

While there aren’t immediate areas of overlap, I look forward to meeting you at one of the CFA events.

    Best,
    Anita

    Hi everyone,

I'm Arwen, an ESG Consultant at Novatus Global, a FinTech advisory firm focusing on ESG regulatory compliance and strategy. We mainly work with asset managers (in private and listed companies), around due diligence, stewardship and reporting models, but I'm personally focused around the potential opportunities around private markets, specifically around impact investing. I also have a vested interest in climate risk, and more broadly the role of insurance - which you may already know will become a huge focus in the coming years.

I'm looking to connect with individuals from all aspects of the financial services value chain, expand my knowledge in these key areas and engage in stimulating discussions!

Looking forward to meeting you all :)

    Arwen

PS (shameless plug): I started an ESG Podcast over the last two months with my dear colleagues, discussing real-time topics around sustainable finance, intending to provide 7-minute snapshot updates on the ESG universe. Do let me know if you'd like us to cover to anything in particular - would really appreciate some feedback!
