Report: Evolving the Carbon Capture and Storage Value Chain Market (Gaffney Cline)

CCUS (carbon capture storage and utilisation) attracts a lot of attention from both industrial manufacturers (especially energy intensive industries and high emitters) and investors. Companies offering modular solutions, like Carbon Clean, are scaling up at amazing speeds. CCUS is not a novel idea, it has been around for a long time. But it has received a new boost lately. For many industrials CCUS offer a realistic and concrete solutions to achieve emission reductions by certain dates and achieve their net zero plans. Energy intensive industries are starting to deploy this also because green hydrogen remains very expensive and not too scalable at the moment.

Opinions differ. Many believe that CCUS is the "transition" solution, others believe that it is a distraction and that it is taking the resources and capital from the things that we should be doing (which is stop emissions altogether, not catch and store them).

The proponents of CCUS cite creation of new jobs, development of new industry and supply chain, utilisation of depleted oil fields or salt taverns, possibility use existing pipelines etc. Lots of successful ccus projects already around the world. The opponents believe that this procrastinates the progress for other green technologies and takes the capital away from saving the planet, it allows fossil fuel companies to continue and not change. There are also potential problems of leaks.

Here's the report on CCUS from Gaffney Cline, an interesting read.

What is your experience with CCUS?
