Volunteer Group: CFA UK Mentoring Programme 2020 - Mentee
The Mentoring Programme 2020 saw 85 pairs of mentors and mentees matched during lockdown and continue to thrive and support each other for 6 months.

Why did you want to be mentored?

I am very happy with my role and employer and I was and continue to be keen to keep progressing within my organisation. I was hoping by having a mentor, especially one external to my employer, it would help me build and work on a career plan and better navigate myself within all the areas of asset management.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given by your mentor?
I really can't pinpoint one pearl of wisdom that my mentor has imparted (as there were so many). My mentor initially spent a lot of time reframing many of my work situations, providing clarity and the tools for me to think of different solutions that may not have been so obvious to me in the past. My mindset and confidence has changed materially since we started.

What is your greatest learning from being mentored?
Self confidence and being bold when needed. My mentor did a 360 feedback exercise with colleagues past and present to ascertain how I presented myself in a professional environment and where I can improve. It was a real eye opening exercise that helped me become more deliberate with my positive actions and improve those that may have been holding back.

How has being mentored helped you in your career?
Building a career plan. It is very easy to get complacent in your role and just keep "doing" without being deliberate in your actions. Working with your mentor you can really explore the many paths available and start working towards the one you are most passionate about.

What would you say to encourage others to step forward as a mentor?
There really is no downside to speaking to someone, whatever their career background, about what you are currently doing and where you want to be. Carving out an hour every couple of weeks to reflect and strategise with a willing listener about what is going on at work and how you can improve it is always going to be a useful exercise.
